Blue Dicks (Dichelostemma Capitatum)

Blue Dicks, equally as beautiful as they are inappropriately named.

Blue Dicks, or Purplehead's (no joke) are native to California and the rest of the western states. They are characterized by the cluster of purple/blue waxy flowers on the end of their large round smooth stems. The plant reproduces both sexually, and vegetativley through the plants corm (a small underground root). The plant thrives on open, highly sun-exposed disturbed (by fire, or agriculture) fields. The plant typically grows to be 1-2 feet high.

Commonly confused with: Lupine (color),

Look for it: in recovering landscapes, especially open fire torn fields.

Native Uses: Local tribes dug down and collected the corm which was a staple carbohydrate in their diet.
