New Name, Same Blog

As I stood on the banks of the Smith River in northern california's Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park watching a river otter dive under the clean and transparently turquoise water and hunt for food I thought of how I might describe this moment of connection with nature in a blog. My better nature snapped me out of that line of thinking, reminding me to simply enjoy the moment and worry about the blog later.

Now as I sit at my computer reflecting back with a glass of wine, far away from the rocky banks of the river I think of how perfectly peaceful the river was, how elegant the clouds hanging in the distant tree covered mountains were, how inviting were the call of the birds. When I think back, I just smile to myself with the same goofy smile I had on my face by the river.

What I don't think about at all are trendy words like "funemployment". I've always felt a little uneasy about the name "the funemployment blog" especially as the blog becomes more about trips into the wilderness and less about my unemployment (or underemployment now really). Consequently I've changed the name of the blog to "Backcountry Bliss". I feel it captures what this blog has turned in to, it's less about me and my fortunes or misfortunes, and more about the places I visit and what I can share of them.

With yesterday being my 100th post, next week being the one year anniversary of the blog, and just a few days until my Mt. Whitney climb (and the realization of a dream I've had for a number of years), I feel like this couldn't be a more perfect time to make the switch.

So this event does not pass by too unceremoniously I'll be announcing a contest and giveaway. I've also finally fixed the photo gallery and added some new, previously unpublished photos. Swing by and check it out and be sure to check back in later today for news on the contest.
