Discussion: What's your favorite trail food?

Regardless of where we go, what's in our packs, one thing will always be with us on a backpacking trip: Freeze-Dried Granola with Blueberries and Milk ....mmm mmhm that stuff is tasty. It always hits the spot on those cold mountain mornings. I don't know if its the fat from the milk, the protein from the granola, or just the warmth, but it always sends us out on to the trail in high spirits.

Beylah at the start of our second day backpacking in Point Reyes. Guess what we had for breakfast...

I'd like to know what your favorite trail meal is. Be it a burrito from 7-11, a backpacking meal, or your homemade trail-mix cookies (Beylah made these once, delicious! So delicious that I devoured them all before we could find a trail to bring them on). Whatever that delicious meal is that lifts your spirits, tell me about it.

  1. Bey and I are also huge fans of these tuna packets from Safeway, I suspect these are actually pretty gross but its amazing what tastes good when the body is craving nutrients.

  2. Actually, the granola is with bananas, not blueberries! And it's not freeze dried. It is, however, quite amazing. Seriously, that's like backpacker's crack... Maybe that's why it looks like I'm on something in the above picture?

  3. It is freeze dried, all those meals are. You're right though, it is bananas not blueberries! I knew that seemed wrong.

  4. Nature's Path makes some really nice instant oat and mulitgrain cereals that make a good source of protein and fiber. We also like to munch on baby carrots, and Trader Joe's selection of dried fruits and nuts is excellent.

  5. Thanks for commenting Randy (I love reading way points), do you mix your own trail mix from TJ's stuff? or do they sell a package you'd recommend?

  6. Sometimes I mix it myself, but other times I get lazy and just get something already prepared. I like the mix called "Simply the Best Trek Mix". I also like the pepitas and "Just (dried) Mango" slices. Not the kind of stuff I normally eat though because it's all so high in calories.
