This past week fellow Bay Area outdoors blogger @thegearcaster posted something on twitter that I have been thinking about a lot recently.
Hunger on overdrive after a few big alpine days #gimmefood— Amy Jurries (@TheGearcaster) August 15, 2013
Every summer, for the last two or three years it’s happened to me too, the infinite hunger. That devour a burrito then scarf down another and still want more hunger. Having a few hours after work means getting out for bike rides in the hills or long runs on the trails and that’s hungry work. Throw in all-day play on the weekends and things start to ramp up. Once I’ve strung together about 3 or 4 high-energy weeks I’m in the infinite hunger zone and It’s both amazing and horrible at the same time.
That kind of hunger is a good indicator that I’m taking advantage of the summer (since my metabolism is running wild) - it’s also really uncomfortable being hungry all the time. It’s nice to be able to eat more of my favorite foods - but I really need to be more diligent usual in making sure that’s good healthy fuel I’m putting in and not crap. Its good for my health to be getting out a lot - but since most of it is pure cardio I’m not actually losing any weight (which I should be).
Ultimately I think I’m more excited than not when my metabolism goes crazy, I’ve come to think of it as a sign of the season.
Here are 4 of my favorite recipes to fuel all-day summer play:
